Fire fighters responded to reports a dog had fallen into the River Avon in Salisbury City Centre yesterday morning.

The incident happened near the Bishop's Mill with the 16 year old Jack Russel understood to have been swept under the bridge there.

A crew from Salisbury along with two from Hampshire including the county's animal rescue team were in attendance on Fisherton Street.

Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue gave Greatest Hits Radio this statement:

"We were called to The Maltings in Salisbury at 10.46am yesterday after reports that a Jack Russell dog had fallen into the river. A crew from Salisbury, a technical rescue team from Winchester and a supporting crew from Overton attended and a full search was carried out along both river banks and the immediate area, but with no success. Our stop came at 12.23pm, with no sign of the missing dog, sadly."

The distressed owner was comforted at the scene by members of the public.

Several people gathered hoping the dog would be found ok.
