A man has been given a suspended prison sentence and disqualified from driving after the manner of his driving caused concern to the public.

Neil Shooter, 51, of Soaper Lane, Bradford, pleaded guilty to driving a vehicle over the specified alcohol limit at Swindon Magistrates’ Court.

He was given an eight-week prison sentence, suspended for 12 months, disqualified from driving for 36 months and ordered to pay a victim surcharge.

At approximately 9.30am on Friday ( 2nd July) officers received reports of a silver Volkswagen Polo driving erratically on the A303 near Amesbury.

The vehicle was stopped on London Road, Amesbury, and officers suspected Shooter of being intoxicated.

A roadside test was carried out and Shooter was arrested on suspicion of driving whilst over the prescribed alcohol limit.

In custody Shooter provided a reading of more than three times over the drink drive limit.

PC Casey Stiles, of the Amesbury Community Policing Team, said:

"Our message has always been a clear one, there is never an excuse to drive whilst under the influence of alcohol.

"The manner of Shooter’s driving on Friday morning left members of the public concerned for their safety and they rightly contacted us, for which we are thankful.

"We will continue to police drink and drug driving robustly and hope that Shooter understands the severity of his actions."

He added

"If you are suspicious of someone driving dangerously or under the influence of alcohol, then please call 101 and give as much information as possible, including the driver's details or description and their car registration.

"If you believe that a crime is being committed and somebody is already behind the wheel then please call 999."
