Wiltshire Police is taking a zero-tolerance policy on abuse during the upcoming Euros football tournament.

The competition, being held in Germany, gets underway on Friday (14th June), with England among the favourites.

DCI Lucy Thorne said reports of domestic abuse increase during major tournaments, but that football is not the cause.

"It just creates opportunities for people to be a bit more emotional and have a slightly increased alcohol intake," she said.

They're appealing to the public to support people who we think might be suffering abuse by being extra vigilant towards them during the next few weeks.

She added: "To people themselves who may be suffering abuse, know that we will be there to support you."

DCI Thorne said that if reaching out to the police was a step too far, there are other partner agencies on the police website who can help.
