A dog who ate what she thought was a snack on the banks of the River Avon ended up with a fishing hook in her stomach .

Tara's owners spotted a long wire sticking out her mouth and quickly rushed her to The Vets in Salisbury.

It's believed the discarded fishing line had bait left on the end which had attracted the cockapoo.

Staff at the practice in Exeter Street luckily managed to remove the hook without the need for surgery.

The practice explained what happened on their Facebook page.

"We managed to thread the fishing line through a narrow pipe, which we then slowly passed down into Tara’s stomach - unhooking the fish hook which then allowed us to pull it into the pipe to safely remove it.

"Had this not have been successful we would have needed to surgically remove the hook from Tara’s stomach.

Spot the hook!

The Cockapoo's good nature was praised by staff at the practice.

"Tara was such a superstar, she enjoyed a lovely meal following her procedure and loved all the fuss she got from our vets and nurses."

FULL RECOVERY

Tara has now made a full recovery but The Vets is warning this could have been a lot worse and are reminding people not to leave fishing hooks behind:

"PLEASE don’t leave any fishing hooks or line behind as it can really harm our wildlife and dogs like lovely Tara."
