Deer rescued from river in Salisbury's Maltings

Fire crews have been called out to help the animal

Salisbury fire crews are helping to rescue a deer from the river bank in The Maltings this afternoon (Wednesday 19th April).

The young animal got itself stuck at around 12.00pm today, between the Market Walk and the weir by the Mill pub.

The walkway was closed for a time, while crews waited for rescue experts to arrive

Specialist water rescue officers have been called out to lead the operation.

They got into the water to guide the deer to safety.

Water rescue crews from Poole got into the River Avon to help the deer

It's been put into cage with a cover and taken away to a vets for a check-up.

The walkway through the Maltings had been temporarily closed while the rescue's been carried out.

The little deer has been taken away for a veterinary check-up

In a statement, Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue said:

"We were called to The Maltings at 12.08pm today after a member of the public reported a small deer being trapped on the river bank.

"A crew from Salisbury initially attended and, having assessed the scene, a water rescue team was mobilised from Poole. They were able to rescue the deer and it has now been taken to the vet. Our stop was at 2.52pm."

The deer was put into a cage for a check up with a vet, before it's released again
