With Salisbury Cathedral currently closed to the public due to the pandemic people are unable to light a candle and take a moment to reflect.

Now, in a touching gesture staff there are offering to light one for us in a virtual community of "prayer and light."

HOW DOES IT WORK?

The idea is that we light a candle at home and dedicate it to someone we love, give thanks for support we have received or pray for those who are in need.

You'll then need to take a photo of your candle and upload it to the special section on the Cathedral's website where you can add a dedication.

Online dedications will be added to the prayer list and used by clergy for daily worship.

A real candle will be lit in the Cathedral for every virtual candle uploaded.

The submitted photos will be put into an online gallery as well.

The Dean of Salisbury, The Very Revd Nicholas Papadopulos said:

"Everyone has been touched by the pandemic, and we hope that Light a Candle will allow people to give voice to their particular experiences of it - their grief, their thanks, their hope. These will together amount to a shared record of these times: of those who have helped us, of those who are sick, of those who have recovered and, very sadly, of those who have died."

Anna Macham, Canon Precentor said:

"Each candle lit on our virtual page will be mirrored in the Cathedral, uniting the virtual and the real worlds in which our worship currently exists. We will remember those mentioned in our prayers and as we do so, reflecting on the profound changes this virus has made to all our lives and giving thanks for the strength, courage and hope that is being demonstrated by so many during this pandemic."
