The A36 remains closed between the A338 at Salisbury and A27 at Whiteparish following a serious collision this morning (Wednesday 6th July).

A Vauxhall Astra collided with a wall near the turn at Petersfinger.

The driver, a 45 year old man, suffered serious injuries and has been taken to Southampton General Hospital.

His female passenger suffered minor injuries.

In a statement, Wiltshire Police said:

"We were called to the collision at approximately 3.30am this morning.

The road closure is likely to be in place for several hours. Drivers are urged to follow the diversions. "

National Highways have also warned the closure is "expected to be protracted and in place for a considerable time" along with details of the diversion route.

It's now been confirmed by Hampshire Police that the collision happened as the Astra was being pursued by officers and hadn't stopped for them.

The incident's been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).
