The cycle lanes were installed in Brown Street and Exeter Street for six months from September 2020 to March this year.

At the time Wiltshire Council stressed they were put in place on existing bus routes "to enable more people to safely cycle instead of using public transport during the COVID-19 pandemic."

On street parking was removed and bollards installed in a move that was heavily criticised by local residents.

The scheme was part of the Government's Emergency Active Travel Fund and didn't need the usual extensive consultation.

A Freedom of Information Request has revealed the cycle lanes cost ÂŁ45,742 to install.

Including other similar schemes across the county the total price tag was ÂŁ226,910 whilst social distancing works cost ÂŁ127,246.
