A Royal Navy serviceman went “above and beyond” at Salisbury District Hospital through the pandemic.

During the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, Salisbury District Hospital had a great amount of support from the Military.

They worked with hospital staff and helped provide care to patients across the hospital at a very challenging time.

Air Engineering Technician, George Russ was one of those who stepped in to support the hardworking hospital staff.

He spent time on the Acute Medical Unit, where he made a huge difference to both staff and patients.

George has been awarded a special commendation presentation after being nominated by the hospital’s Chaplaincy Team.

He was nominated for bringing comfort to a patient towards the end of their life, as he spent time to sit and read to them.

George was one of around 45 military personnel who helped the hospital during some of the toughest months of the pandemic.

Stacey Hunter, Salisbury NHS Foundation Trust Chief Executive, said:

“We owe a debt of gratitude to George, and to all the military personnel who came to our assistance when we needed extra support.

“They really became part of the team and helped our staff and patients through the peak of the pandemic.”
