Supporters take on new Celebration Walk for Salisbury Hospice
The event replaces the Midnight Walk
Salisbury Hospice's newest fundraiser, the Celebration Walk takes place this evening.
The event aims to 'commemorate losses' and 'celebrate resilience' over the past two years of the pandemic.
The charity says it's important to reflect the changes:
'Much has changed since the last in person Midnight Walk held in May 2019 and Salisbury Hospice Charity would like to take this opportunity to recognise and celebrate the small victories, the big losses, the challenges overcome and remember those who are greatly missed. The pandemic has changed us all and the charity wishes to acknowledge that; gather as a community, and collectively look towards a brighter future'
Participants will set off from Salisbury Guildhall at 6pm taking on either a 5 mile or 10 mile route to enjoy the 'golden hours before the sun sets' as opposed to waking throught the night like the event's predecessor the Midnight Walk!
Both routes includes a stop at St Thomas's Church to light a candle in memory or a loved one or mark something special.
More than 120 people have signed up and organisers say you can sign up this evening too.
In line with HRH The Queen’s wish to celebrate her Jubilee by planting trees, each finisher will receive a sapling instead of a medal. This will be a living reminder of whoever or whatever they are celebrating.
And there's another nice gesture, ribbons from one of the displays at Salisbury Cathedral's Festival of Flowers will also be handed out to those taking part.
All funds raised from the walk will help fund vital services that Salisbury Hospice provides, helping nearly 1,000 every year.
The charity aims to raise raise £1.5 million of the £2.9 million running costs of the Hospice each year.
