A catapult ban is to be introduced in Downton and the surrounding villages to tackle anti-social behavour in the area.

Wiltshire Council launched a constulation last month on introducing a Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO) following ongoing issues with homes and vehicles being targeted.

Leader Richard Clewer said:

"We received over 120 responses, mainly from local residents. 89% told us that the issue relating to the use of catapults in the area was a problem or a very big problem. As a result the council will be proceeding with the introduction of a PSPO."

A Salisbury Reds bus carrying school children was targeted in December

When will the ban be introduced and how will it work?

The PSPO is expected to be introduced in mid August and would not only cover Downton but Redlynch, Morgan's Vale, Woodfalls and Lover.

It would essentially ban anyone from possessing a catapult, slingshot or similar items capable of launching a projectile along with ball bearings and pellets.

Anyone found in breach of it by a police officer or an 'authorised person' by the force or Wiltshire Council could be issued with an on the spot Fixed Penalty Notice of ÂŁ100.

The local authority says a FPN can be issued to anyone over the age of 10.
