Over £200,000 worth of repairs are being made to sewers in Calne to protect the environment.

The work, which started this month (June) is part of a £2.5m investment to improve the local water supply, which is set to conclude later this year.

The current three week programme has seen sewers relined and sealed withing Castlefield Park, on fields near Bowood View and within private land near the Bowood Estate.

This work follows investigations into defect faults within the network and is aimed at preventing polluted water escaping and to stop groundwater enter the sewers.

A Wessex Water spokesperson said: “By carrying out this work we can reduce the risk of pollution or groundwater entering the system, which can lead to flooding or storm overflows automatically discharging diluted untreated water into rivers or the sea if the system becomes overwhelmed.

“We have also been using sensitive no-dig techniques, which are quicker and less intrusive than the conventional excavations to replace the pipe. The work within Castlefield Park was in safe, fenced-off areas and did not impact local walking routes.’’
