More building materials and extra pairs of hands needed for Amesbury gardening group

Amesbury Green Fingers are looking for paving slabs and labourers

The Amesbury Green Fingers group are looking for materials to create a disabled access pathway.

50 paving slabs have been donated to the Gardening Group so far but they need a group of people to put the pathway together.

They are trying to make it as accessible to everyone.

But, at the moment those who are disabled or elderly can access the garden as they are mainly grass.

So, a sturdy pathway that people can ride their mobility scooters or have their wheels chairs pushed on would open the garden up to more people in the community.

Louise Wheeler from the group told Greatest Hits Radio Salisbury:

“We advertise ourselves as an all inclusive setting and that means we need to have the access to our local disabled community.

“We are desperately in need of helpers so that we can make it safe. Move paving slabs and gravel are needed.

“Anyone who can dig out the grass so that we can lay the slabs level with grass so that there are no accidents or risks of anybody getting to other bits of the garden.

"The design will resemble a tree from the gate so there will be smaller pathways coming off the main one so that people can access the beds.”

The group are having an offical opening day

On the 25th September the Amesbury Green Finger group are officially holding an open day.

They have invited a local group called Salisbury Silvers, a community engagement group for older people living in and around Salisbury.

Louise says it’s another reason to get the project going now.

“I should imagine there may be a few people there that need a solid pathway to access everything.

“The actual open day is to introduce ourselves to the actual community and gain more members that are experienced gardeners for them to come and share their knowledge with us.

“All ages and abilities are welcome to come along.”

About the Amesbury Green Fingers group

In a March a group of keen gardeners started a community gardening project but were sowing fruits and veggies from their window sills at home.

Then in May, Amesbury Town Council allocated them a big plot at the Stockport Allotment site.

Since, the group has grown and now has over 110 members.

Already the gardeners have installed a green house and garden planters, that they made themselves from upcycled pallets and wood donations.
