An advanced X-ray body scanner at HMP Erlestoke has managed to prevent a number illegal items entering the prison.

Things like drugs, mobile phones and memory sticks have all been spotted by the new technology within just months of it being installed.

It was part of the government's £100 million investment into security in the country's prisons and to crack down on crime inside jails.

They say the illegal items detected would have been destined for the prison wings, fuelling the illicit economy and potential violence.

HMP Erlestoke Governor, Tim Knight, said:

"The positive results from the scanner was immediate, allowing us to prevent concealed illicit items getting into the hands of prisoners.

There is no doubt that the introduction of this equipment has and will continue to help support the security and safety of all prisoners and staff at HMP Erlestoke."

So far the innovative tech has been installed at prisons identified at most risk of smuggling.

In total 51 jails across England and Wales now have it, which has collectively stopped more than 3,500 items being smuggled in.

Prisons Minister, Alex Chalk MP, added:

"The new technology is having a hugely positive impact, stemming the flow of contraband into jails and allowing staff to focus on rehabilitation.

The scanners form part of our wider aim to transform prisons, stepping up security to cut crime and ultimately better protecting the public."
