RAC braced for busiest late-May bank holiday since 2019
An estimated 19 million journeys are expected this weekend
An estimated 19 million leisure trips are expected to take place this bank holiday weekend, according to the RAC.
They are anticipating over three million journeys per day on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday over the final long weekend before the end of August.
The major motorways will be among the hotspots for traffic over the weekend – but the A303 past Stonehenge will also be carrying a lot of drivers to their destinations.
RAC Breakdown spokesperson Rod Dennis says the road has “motorway levels” of traffic at times:
“There are some particularly tricky roads in our region, the A303 is a notorious bottle neck around the Stonehenge area.”
As a result, villages like Larkhill and Shrewton could be heavily affected.
Drivers are advised to plan their journeys appropriately, considering when they travel, by leaving earlier or travelling in the evening.
But with good weather forecast, people will be encouraged to travel to make the most of it.
Rod said:
“If there’s high temperatures at a particular point in the weekend, those are the days to look out for when comes to volume of traffic and when it comes to break downs at the side of the road.”
He also said a lack of suitable alternative travel options plays a big role in the heavy traffic:
“We’re in the situation in the country where dependency on the private car is at almost record levels. Drivers tell us in so many cases that there aren’t feasible alternatives around public transport to use.”
