Around 40 firefighters have been called to tackle a fire which destroyed a campervan and then spread to a barn close to the M27 in Hampshire.

Crews were first called to the scene in Salisbury Road in Ower, near Romsey, at around 4pm on Monday afternoon (October 28th).

It happened close to junction 2 of the road, with drivers travelling through the area being urged to take care.

At its height, eight engines were called to tackle the fire as it spread to a barn containing approximately 500 bales of hay.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used four jets to tackle the blaze.

Speaking in the early hours of Tuesday morning, spokesperson for Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue said:

"We have scaled down our operations to three fire engines. We are likely to continue to have a presence onsite throughout Tuesday.

"There is still significant smoke in the area and residents are advised to keep their doors and windows closed."
