Application for part of River Avon in Salisbury to become bathing site

A public consultation is open until 10th October

A section of the River Avon flowing through Salisbury could become an official bathing water site.

An application has been made to DEFRA for part of the river in Queen Elizabeth Gardens to gain the status, which would also bring water quality benefits.

When a new bathing water site is established, the Environment Agency carries out tests on the quality of the water, publishing the results.

If approved, it will mean polluters have a greater responsibility to act in ways that keep the water quality high, meaning it protects both the health of the river and the local community.

A public consultation for us to share our thoughts is open until 10th October 2025.

The application is supported by FLOW CIC, Extinction Rebellion Salisbury, Wildlife and Wellbeing, Wiltshire Wildlife Trust, New Sarum WI, and Salisbury Transition City.
