Amesbury's Tree of Light to be illuminated later
Town gets in the festive spirit with popular service
Last updated 5th Dec 2021
Christmas kicks of in Amesbury later as the town holds its Tree of Light ceremony.
It takes place in the central car park with organisers St Mary and St Mellor Scout Group joining forces with The Stonehenge Chamber of Trade this year to put on a fayre in the afternoon before the lights are switched on around 5.20pm.
Two local children will have the honour.
The coloured bulbs on the tree have extra special meaning.
The white lights signify the loss of a loved one, the green lights honour fallen military personnel and the blue lights celebrate the efforts of emergency services and all the local key workers in Amesbury during the pandemic.
You can still donate to dedicate one of the lights via JustGiving with the money raised this year going to the Stars Appeal.
Local resident Neil Dunford, who helps with the organisation, told Greatest Hits Radio it's a very special event;
"The Tree of Light Service is important as it brings the community together to remember their lost loved ones at this special time of year. It is also a chance for the local community to show their appreciation to our wonderful NHS, Police, Fire and Military services, and also ALL the key workers who have worked tirelessly throughout the pandemic."
