A £90,000 project to improve sewers in Amesbury has got underway, but is bringing some disruption for the town centre.

Wessex Water crews are 'relining' lengths of pipe to reduce the risk of leaks and sewer collapses.

Robots are being used in what the supplier's calling a 'no-dig technique', which is also thought to make the job quicker with fewer carbon emissions.

Some excavation will be needed to construct new manhole chambers though.

Road closures in place

While the work's taking place, Salisbury Street and Church Street are closed to through traffic - from the Kings Arms onwards.

The diversion route takes drivers along the A345, through Netton, Upper Woodford, Great Dunford, Normanton and West Amesbury until Friday 2nd November.

There'll be three-way temporary traffic lights on Salisbury Road between 6.00pm and 7.00am each evening from Monday 6th November to Friday 10th November.

Finally, from Monday 13th November to Friday 17th November, there will be a night-time closure of Salisbury Street and Church Street (6.00pm to 7.00am) from Kings Arms onwards.

Again, diversions will take traffic through the Woodford Valley.

Wessex Water say they've written to customers and businesses near the locations affected, to inform them about the work being carried out.

Project manager Kiarna Homer said:

“Relining and sealing sewers in this way helps protect the environment, via the prevention of foul water escaping and groundwater entering the pipes, which can lead to flooding or storm overflows automatically discharging into rivers or the sea if the system becomes overwhelmed.

“Although some excavation will be needed for the construction of manhole chambers, by using ‘no-dig’ techniques as much as possible we can minimise the impact of this work on local communities.’’
