Salisbury's Alabaré asks supporters to 'sleep out' at home
The charity says one uncomfortable night for us will help homeless people
Alabaré would normally be planning their flagship Big Sleep events in locations like Salisbury Cathedral at this time of year.
The Covid-19 pandemic means they're taking the event virtual again, encouraging people to take part in their gardens on the night of Friday 5th March.
We're asked to spend one night 'sleeping rough' in return for sponsorship, to support those who have to do that all the time.
Alabaré says the pandemic and current lockdown restrictions are putting 'thousands more people at risk of homelessness', due to the economic and mental health issues the situation's brought with it.
All the money raised will go towards the accommodation and support that Alabaré runs in Salisbury and across the South West.
Laura Knight, Community Engagement Officer at Alabaré says:
"We are thrilled that people are responding so positively to the idea of doing the Big Sleep at Home. Thanks to all those signing up on-line, we can still hold this vital, community event, making a massive difference for those who are struggling or facing crisis during this devasting pandemic."
VIRTUAL EVENTS PLANNED FOR BIG SLEEPERS
As well as bedding down for the night in not very comfortable conditions, those taking part can also get involved in some online activities, alongside others signed up.
There'll be a 'bedtime story' from award-winning Salisbury author Barney Norris, a den building workshop with former SAS Major Ken Hames, and a quiz.
Alabaré Chief Exec Andrew Lord, and some of the many people supported by the charity will also help to explain how important events like this can be to help vulnerable people.
We can find out more and sign up through the Alabaré website.
