Salisbury homeless charity plans 'pandemic proof' fundraiser
Alabaré is hoping we'll sign up for their Big Sleep at Home.
The charity's calling on supporters to help them with fundraising ahead of what they've said is likely to be a challenging winter, with the Covid-19 crisis continuing.
Alabaré's holding one of their flagship Big Sleep events on Friday 9th October.
But this one will be different, with people asked to sleep out in their own gardens or outdoor spaces to get just a small taste of what it's like for those living on the streets.
The date for the Big Sleep at Home coincides with World Homeless Day on 10th October, and Homeless Sunday the following day (11th October).
Laura Knight is the Community Fundraiser for Alabaré:
"It is so easy to get involved this year, no matter where you live. By sleeping somewhere uncomfortable or unusual for one night this autumn, you can help change the lives of people who desperately need our support.
"Why not camp out in the garden, or swap your bed for a sleeping bag on your kitchen floor, it's your choice but by getting sponsored to sleep away from the comfort of your bed for a night you will be making a massive difference.
"We hope that schools and community groups, churches and businesses will all encourage their members to get involved, and maybe video call each other that night. There could be a bit of friendly competition to see who has the most uncomfortable bed, or maybe one to see who has the best mug for their hot chocolate - the possibilities are endless!
"I am sure it will be a memorable night, and people will have fun whilst raising money for such an important, life-saving cause."
WHERE WILL THE MONEY GO?
As with Alabaré's other Big Sleep events, all the money raised will go towards the charity's work with vulnerable and homeless people.
They run drop in centres, like the one at Barnard Street in Salisbury, where people can get hot food and dry clothes.
The charity also provides accommodation to those who need support to get off the streets, into support for the issues that have led to that situation and helping them find employment and independence.
Alabaré CEO, Andrew Lord says this winter is expected to be tough, due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic:
"Intervention by charities and the government has thankfully helped to reduce the number of vulnerable homeless people left to face this killer virus alone on our streets so far this year, however without swift action now we are looking at an impending crisis in the private rental sector as tenants who could not pay their rents are evicted, as well as an increase in unemployment and mental ill health risk.
"The combination of all these factors means tragically we are likely to see a surge in homelessness as the winter sets in. This is why we so urgently need everyone's help."
