Hopes to partially reopen part of A303 in Wiltshire this weekend
National Highways say work to clear flooding at Deptford is ongoing
It's hoped part of the closed section of Wiltshire's A303 eastbound will be reopened this weekend.
National Highways say they've been 'working round the clock' to clear flooding at Deptford.
The water levels have meant the stretch between there and Longbarrow has been shut eastbound since Wednesday (18th January).
It's anticipated that one lane will be reopened to traffic by tomorrow morning (22nd January).
We're told initial plans to put in a contraflow on the westbound side now won't be needed.
While the closure is in place, eastbound traffic on the A303 is being diverted along the A36 and B390 to Shrewton, along the A360 and rejoining the A303 at Longbarrow.
Ian Thompson, South West Strategic Incident Lead for National Highways, said:
“Flooding has been a regional issue in the South West, and we’ve done everything we can to prevent the run-off floodwater on the A303 from freezing and creating further issues.
“The eastbound carriageway has been closed to protect the travelling public but thanks to the work of our contractors, it looks like we’ll have one lane back open for traffic by Sunday morning.
“We appreciate this has caused delays to people’s journeys, we thank people for their patience and in the meantime we advise people to plan ahead and add a little extra time for their journeys.
“Further mitigation work will continue over the weekend and hopefully we’ll be in a position to fully reopen the A303 eastbound at this location as soon as it’s safe to do so.”
