The A303 has fully reopened at Deptford overnight, after nine days of problems due to flooding.

The eastbound carriageway and entry slip was shut by National Highways, at the A36 interchange, last Wednesday (18th January).

Water was covering the road, with issues also spreading towards the westbound side as well.

Lane 2 eastbound could be reopened at the weekend (Sunday 22nd January), once some of the water had subsided.

At its worst, the flooding covered the eastbound A303, leaving it closed from Deptford to Longbarrow

Since then, engineers have been working to remove mud, silt and stones for the A303 carriageway, as well as clearing drainage gullies and strengthening flood defences there.

That means the Lane 1 and entry slip closures have now been lifted.

Rob Penney, South West Head of Service Delivery for National Highways, said:

“We’ve contended with freezing temperatures on top of the flooding and have been working around the clock to get the road reopened.

“Water levels remain high, we’ll continue to monitor the location and weather forecasts, and in the meantime we appreciate this has caused delays to people’s journeys and we thank drivers for their patience.”
