The latest government figures shows that in the Wiltshire Council area 787 visas have been issued so far to Ukrainian people fleeing their country.

The same data says 327 have arrived in the county as well.

People were encouraged to sign up to the Homes for Ukraine scheme, to provide rooms and accommodation to trying to escape the conflict.

Here in Wiltshire, 2,823 households have registered, with 393 currently matched with 1,093 individuals.

There have also been 122 school applications, 77 primary and 45 secondary, with many joining classes since the new term has begun.

Cllr Richard Clewer, Leader of Wiltshire Council said:

“Wiltshire has a long history of supporting people fleeing war torn countries and once again residents are offering support in many ways including those offering a safe place to stay to Ukrainian refugees. Because of the high numbers coming to Wiltshire, we’ve stepped up our efforts alongside partners to ensure the appropriate checks and support are in place."

PUBLIC WEBINAR

Any households taking in families, or any Ukrainians who have moved to the county can listen to a public webinar next week to get help.

Wiltshire Council are holding the virtual meeting on Monday (16th May) at 6:30pm.

The webinar will cover work to support refugees by Wiltshire Council and partners including accommodation checks and payments for sponsors through the Homes for Ukraine scheme and help with school places.

There will also be discussion of community support and how people can be involved and time for questions and answers.

The public are now being asked to submit any questions they might have.

Cllr Clewer added:

"I would encourage anyone who wants to find out more or generally ask questions to join our webinar. If you prefer you can submit questions in advance. We want people to be informed and this webinar will be an opportunity to share the latest updates.”

You can ask a question by emailing communications@wiltshire.gov.uk.
