20mph speed limit in Wilton being considered

Local people say it will improve safety when crossing roads in the town

A blanket 20mph speed limit in Wilton is being considered with local drivers being asked for their thoughts.

The Town Council held an event at the Castle Meadow Pavillion to get feedback from road users.

The reduced speed limit is being discussed at the request of a group of local people, which led to Wiltshire Council's Highways staff carrying out average speed checks on many of the towns roads.

The results of that data mean several roads could see their speed limit slashed from 30mph to 20mph - with some remaining unchanged.

Mayor of Wilton and Town Council leader, Alan Crossley, the request was based on safety grounds.

"Their request was to improve safety of crossing the roads in Wilton. The crossing points we have are all within what could be an acceptable 20mph limit.

"Some people want the area that's in the 20mph limit to be wider and as far as the Town boundaries, but that's up for debate."

The proposal will go through to Wiltshire Council but it's yet unknown how much the proposal would cost.

Mr Crossley said: "It's in this balance point of getting the feedback and then taking it to a proposal though local highways and footway improvement groups."

The Mayor added that there are questions over whether a 20mph zone would be of a benefit to drivers.

He told Greatest Hits Radio: "We're always being told to reduce our speed, reduce the risk. It's at what cost in terms of traffic flow, will it create more congestion by slowing everything down completely or will it improve the flow because things are moving consistently but slower?"

It's expected to be a number of months before a proposal is tabled to Wiltshire Council.
