Salisbury 6th Form College has told us the results students have been collecting today are among the best it's ever seen.

Headteacher at the Tollgate Road site, Ben Hillier, said this years marks are a 'significant' improvement on 2023's.

"We've got we're really lucky this year. I've got students that have got straight A's. We've got students that have got straight distinction, stars in their vocational qualifications," he said, adding that some students had achieved results they might not have expected.

He also praised the work and effort his teachers have put in over the last year.

"It's a huge kind of acknowledgement of the work that we've done. Obviously, there's other indicators that you can follow throughout the year, but at the end of the day, the purpose of being here is to gain those results.

"Every year we kind of look at those results really closely and as you said, for me it's about the staff that worked really hard and acknowledging their hard work," Mr Hillier said.

One of those teachers is Kirsty White, who told Greatest Hits Radio she felt as nervous as the students heading to the college this morning.

She said: "Starting from a couple of days before I get really nervous about how our students have done, not because I think they've done badly, but because I really, want them to do well and to go on to whatever their next pathway is, so I didn't get much sleep last night!"

Ms White added that it makes their efforts worthwhile when they see the joy on pupils faces when they open their results: "It does make it all worth it. You know, all those extra essays they hand in, all the anxiety that we help them get through across the year. It does kind of all come to fruition at results day."

She continued that this years results were really pleasing, saying their had been some 'standout' students.

"There are some students who should be exceptionally proud of themselves as all of them should be. But some of them have gone through some really, really tough things this year," she said.

Students outperform expectations

We spoke to students at the college, who gave us their reaction to their results.

Piper told us she is "very happy with them" as they're "a lot better than expected", while Annabelle told us her results were 'so much better' than she could have imagined.

Their results mean the pair are off to Portsmouth and Bournemouth Universities respectively.

Daniel told us he's done 'very well', with 'much better' results than anticipated, which means he'll be joining Bath university.

We also spoke to Patheek, who told us: "I did well, I'm happy. I got the grades I needed to get into university. He told us he was shocked by how close he was to an A-grade in English, falling five marks short, having not expected to have done as well as he did.

He'll be heading to Southampton University to study Law.
