More than 140 drivers caught breaking speed limit in New Forest

Police along with Community Speedwatch volunteers are monitoring locations in the New Forest today as part of Project Edward which aims to reduce the speed of traffic across the area.

59 motorists were caught going above the 30mph on the A35 at Ashurst, while 41 were caught exceeding the limit at Copythorne.

Two operations have been carried out at Roger Penny Way with the first seeing several fixed penalty notices issued, including for one vehicle caught going a staggering 71mph

The route which runs from Cadnam to Godshill is a 40mph zone.

A second operation at lunchtime on Roger Penny Way found 39 motorists breaking the limit.

The B3078 is one of the worst for animal accidents in the National Park, just days ago a donkey died in a hit and run not far from Telegraph Hill.

The donkey was one of four livestock casualties in the space of four days.

Meanwhile a campaign to install average speed cameras on the busiest routes is gaining momentum with more than 56,000 people signing a petition.
