How visitors to Stamford's Burghley House are finding themselves in 17th Century Italy
There's a new way of viewing the life and history of one of Europe's most celebrated artists
A brand new virtual reality experience is on offer at Burghley House, where visitors are being transported all the way back to 17th Century Italy.
The 'Light in the Shadow' exhibition showcases the work of celebrated female artist Artemisia Gentileschi, but through an entirely different lens.
Artemisia's extraordinary story is being told through goggles and a headset, where users will have a 360 degree view of the building she painted some of her legendary works in, among other pivotal locations in the artist's life.
Visitors will also have the chance to see an authentic Artemisia Gentileschi painting in-person - and not just any one of her artworks either.
Purchased by the ninth Earl of Exeter whilst in Rome, the 400-year-old painting is Artemisia’s earliest-known work and can be seen on display in one of the rooms.
Jen Hattam, head of marketing at Burghley House, thinks the experience gives nod to the future of some art exhibitions:
'I think it's a really fascinating way of making art and art history more accessible to more people, because it really tells the story, and it's an incredible story of this artist.'
'It's like a time machine back into this world and it makes it feel so alive and current, it's a really interesting way to experience art.'
