Police are investigating a spate of vandalism in the grave yard of Peterborough Cathedral.

On its Facebook page, the Cathedral says the vandals ripped out roses, kicked over a metal obelisk and turned grave markers upside down on Monday night.

A spokesperson for the 900 year old Cathedral said: "Sad to report that our gardening team have had to deal with the aftermath of some mindless vandalism today."

"The metal obelisk, together with canes supporting the rose have been pulled up, labels identifying flowers and various types of roses have also been ripped off and a large number of the grave markers have also been turned upside down.

"The Police have been informed."
