A crackdown is taking place across Peterborough to try and uncover illegal and sometimes potentially dangerous goods being sold in the run up to Christmas.

Whilst the majority of those being sold in the city are fine, a number of illegal items have been uncovered by trading standards recently.

Often, these may come from unlicensed traders.

If a young child got hold of them then there's a risk of choking

Alison Jones, councillor for communities on Peterborough City Council, said:

"It's things like the makeup and perfume."

"Vapes are also a big one at the moment."

"Some of the key ones we have concerns about are high strength magnetic balls marked as fidget toys."

"They can be quite dangerous because they're small enough to get swallowed."

"If a young child got hold of them then there's a risk of choking."

These could pose a serious health risks to children

As well as toys, the Chartered Trading Standards Institute (CTSI) issued a warning to parents this Christmas about unauthorised additives in imported American snacks, sweets and fizzy drinks.

Products like these became popular through social media and could pose a serious health risks to children.

The CTSI say many of these imported products fail to meet UK safety and legal standards and lack proper allergen declarations or containing unauthorised additives with known health risks.
