The A1 is always problematic
We asked people in Stamford what they thought. One man said:
"The crossing places where people can cross the carriageway should be closed."
"The A1 is always problematic. You get accidents that mean you're sitting on there for hours before it clears."
Nearly 1,000 collisions were recorded
Nearly 1,000 collisions were recorded on the A1 between Peterborough and Blythe between 2015 to 2022.
There were five safety upgrades between the Tinwell Junction and the Colsterworth Interchange in 2023, but the says there's more she wants to do.
National Highways confirmed they are reviewing the A1’s central reservation crossings and announced further safety works on the A1 between South Witham and Little Ponton.
Work will include resurfacing and refreshing road markings, improving signage, clearing vegetation and carrying out layby maintenance work.
The work is scheduled to start in the new year for completion by the end of March 2025.
Work will take place between 8pm and 6am on weekends to minimise disruption to the community.
During the closures, a fully signed diversion will be in place from the A1 at Stamford, sending traffic along the A606 and A607 and re-joining the A1 at Grantham.
Alicia Kearns MP, Member of Parliament for Rutland and Stamford, said:
'It is enormously welcome news that National Highways will be carrying out further safety improvements on the A1, this time between South Witham and Little Ponton.'
'While there is still more to be done, this maintenance work is an important step forward to improve the safety of this stretch of the A1.'
