Increased cost of living sees Oakham takeaway struggling for orders

People are being affected by the big squeeze

A takeaway and restaurant in Oakham says they've been struggling since lockdown lifted, with fewer orders being placed.

With the cost of living having rocketed across the UK, it's expected this is due to those feeling the squeeze cutting back on unnecessary spending - in this case, takeaways.

Paul runs Everest Lounge, an Indian restaurant in Oakham. He says it's been a big problem:

'The cost of living, all the inflation going up - the cost of fuel and everything. It has a bad impact on the purchasing power of the customers now.

'So yes, it is having a big impact on everything, including restaurants like us'.

Between January and March, Just Eat reported a fall of 1% on the same period last year.

This comes as Just Eat reported a decline in the number of orders received this year compared to the same timeframe in 2021.

Netflix and Bill?

This trend of people making cutbacks is not just apparent in food services, people are also cutting back on other non-essentials such as streaming services.

It's estimated over 1.5 million Brits have already cancelled a streaming service this year to deal with the cost of living crisis, with Netflix being one of the most prominently affected, losing 200,000 subscribers.

Recent data from accounting firm KPMG also shows that one in three survey respondents are cutting back on excess spending on things like spending on clothes and eating out at restaurants.
