Historic weekend as Stamford stages first women's rugby match
The team say it's huge for women's sport in the town
Stamford Women's rugby club will be taking part in their first ever fixture this weekend, after recruiting enough players to make a whole team!
On Sunday afternoon (16th January), the club will host Gainsborough, in a game that's been three years in the making.
The club is urging people to join them in the crowd at 2pm, with free entry.
Ann-Marie Mullen, the club's captain, told Greatest Hits Radio it's huge for women's sport in Stamford: "I think it's amazing. When I was in school, you didn't have rugby teams, football teams. You're seeing it more and more now.
"Having a women's rugby team just encourages other girls. I with I'd done rugby when I was in my twenties. I really missed out, so now I'd love to encourage more girls to come along, even to try it out."
Club secretary Caz Dolby added: "I'd never played rugby before. I came along in September, just to give it a go, I wanted something that was a bit of fitness but that would do something a bit more, get to know people outside work.
"This really does it for us. You get to meet people, you get to have a laugh, you get to get fit."
Anyone interested in joining the club can contact women@stamfordrugby.com, and Sunday's game is at 2pm at Stamford Rugby Club, with free entry.
