Stamford's Red Lion Square fully shut off to drivers for 4 weeks

Works may carry on until 8pm at night and on weekends if needed

There'll be no access to Red Lion Square for drivers for a whole month from Monday (1 August), as resurfacing work enters a key phase.

It follows previous traffic management measures which were put in place earlier this year.

The diversion route will be via Scotgate / A6121 North Street / A6121 East Street / Braze Nose Lane / A1175 St Leonards Street / A1175 Wharf Road / B1081 St Mary’s Street / St John’s Street, and vice versa.

Teams will use the window of opportunity to complete the the main crux of the job by lifting out paving blocks and replace them with new, sturdier stone setts.

There'll be a two-week pause at the end of August for the Burghley Horse Trails.

Work could last up until 8pm in the evening as well as on weekends up until late August, but members of the public will still have access to local businesses.

The project's brought disruption to the square since it was started, but it's hoped the month-long phase will bring things in-line with the expected completion date of October 2022.

Councillor Richard Davies said he was grateful to the pubic for their patience:

'It's starting to look really good now, but this final piece, the final furlong as it were - we are going to have to shut it to get the works done. We're going to work through to 8pm where we can, we're going to work through weekends where we can but unfortunately there will be limited vehicular access.'

'I'm always nervous about suggesting things may happen ahead of schedule because the reality is it's not until you get down into the dirt where you really know what the situation is. Other than the gas main the scheme has gone well. It's a big piece of civil engineering but I think we need to expect a few more weeks of disruption.'
