Stamford church raises money to stop people’s electricity being cut
This month St George’s Church launched it’s Emergency Energy Support Scheme.

St George’s Church in Stamford has launched a new scheme to help those most in need get through the cold weather this winter.
The new Emergency Energy Support Scheme is designed for people at risk of being cut off from their electricity because the can’t afford their pre-payment meter.
The cost of energy on those prepaid meters is higher, and power will cut the moment the meter runs out of credit meaning those with them watch the dial carefully.
Louise Rose is the Community Projects Manager in Stamford. She said:
“We’ve become very aware that with the cost of living and with the energy prices going up that people are really struggling to heat their homes, to cook their dinner.
“We have been working quite hard for a long time to work out how to gift energy. It’s actually very, very difficult.
“So we’ve currently found a way to do that so on the 1st December we launched our Emergency Energy Support Scheme.”
All of the money for the scheme has been raised by the churches congregation
“Over the last couple of months it’s become apparent that more and more people are having their prepayment meters cut off.
“They can tell you how many times that will boil the kettle, or if it will run the bath, and they are just stuck.
“We had people offering us money, especially people who’ve received warm payment funds from the government who don’t need them.
“People want to give. We’re all in it together. We can all feel the effect of what the cost of living has done so we’re all feeling the squeeze.”
The funding is available for people who live in Stamford and use a prepay meter.
