Peterborough uniform shop hopes to ease pressure on families
Second Chance Uniform Shop launches today, helping parents save money and support sustainability
Families in Peterborough can now get free school uniforms all year round thanks to a new scheme in the city centre.
The Second Chance Uniform Shop launches today following a one-day event in Queensgate shopping centre, as organisers decided to open a permanent store.
Parents and students can take away shirts, blazers, trousers and PE kits at no cost, as well as donate or swap good quality primary and secondary school items.
The initiative is backed by Peterborough City Council, Peterborough Youth Council and local Youth MP Danielle Daboh.
'This is a fantastic community initiative'
Councillor Katy Cole, cabinet member for children’s services at Peterborough City Council, said:
“Our initial one-day version at the start of the summer holiday was such a success that we are delighted to bring it back permanently."
"This is a fantastic community initiative and a much-needed one, which we hope can really help families across Peterborough for years to come.”
The project started after Danielle highlighted the high cost of school uniforms in her manifesto, combining sustainability messages from the council’s recycling education team.
The shop welcomes donations of good quality uniforms from schools, families and groups, helping the environment and supporting local families.
The Second Chance Uniform Shop is located on the Queensgate upper level, opposite JD Sports, and is open Monday to Saturday from 10am until 5pm, and Sundays from 10am until 4pm.
