A Rutland support group says stalking needs to be taken more seriously as MPs today debate the matter.

It’s as they decide on the amendments for the Domestic Violence Bill which could include a so called "stalkers register".

It would mean stalkers are added to the sex offender list, so police and social services can keep track to prevent further incidents.

Debbie Hughes is the chief executive of Living Without Abuse group which covers Rutland,

She says cases of homicide sometimes begin with the victim being stalked and the change could mean they're stopped at that stage.

She says for those who experience stalking it can lead to mental torture.

Some may target them through social media and victims are constantly worried about the possible consequences.

Other major changes are being looked at in the bill.

They include better protection for children exposed to domestic abuse.

Campaigners want them classed as victims rather than witnesses.

It's thought the number of youngsters seeing abuse has risen during the pandemic due to the closure of schools.
