Rutland's Public Health Director's calling on people across the county to 'carry on the fight' against Covid-19 next week.

That's despite government plans to scrap all legal coronavirus restrictions on Monday.

Mike Sandys doesn't think that's an excuse to ditch everything we've practiced during the pandemic though:

"Enjoy the fact that we can get back to some normality, but do it by following the advice from the Prime Minister.

"Wear a face mask where it's recommended, keep up good hand hygiene and keep your distance from others where it's appropriate to do so.

"I worry about the cases, but the success of the vaccination programme has kept a lid on serious illnesses and deaths.

"There's currently forty people in hospital at UHL in Leicester with Covid, which's up from a low of six people around two months ago, but clearly it's nothing like the numbers we saw in the first wave.

"Now the Euros have ended, and the schools have broken up, hopefully it'll break the regular patterns of bringing people together in large groups as frequently."
