Rutland's Public Health Director has praised people across the county for getting their Covid-19 vaccine.

Over one million doses have now been administered across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland.

Mike Sandys says it's the best way to protect yourself against the new Delta variant, which was first identified in India:

"People in Rutland have really responded very well to the call for vaccination.

"It's definitely a defence against the Delta variant, but we don't know for sure yet if it'll completely stop hospitalisations or ill health as case rates rise.

"I still think people need to be cautious, particularly with this more transmissible strain."

Meanwhile, Mr. Sandys insists the Delta variant is now undoubtedly the dominant strain of Covid-19 in Rutland:

"Like everywhere, we're seeing the Delta variant take over from the Kent variant.

"Luckily, the Rutland infection rate has been really low for two or three weeks now, but still we've certainly had cases of this new strain across the county."
