Parents across Leicestershire and Rutland are being warned about an increased risk of domestic abuse during the school holidays.

Domestic abuse services in the region reckon the disruption to normal routines can exacerbate existing tensions and conflicts.

There's also concern that kids being home from school may be exposed to domestic violence.

Amy Davies is from Freeva, a helpline supporting victims in Leicestershire Rutland:

'With family life during the holidays, there's a lot to think about. Childcare issues or getaways add extra pressures on all families. But when you've got the dynamic of domestic abuse during that, it's an added layer of pressure.

'The summer holiday period can be really tough for victims. With children being home as well, there's an emotional concern about what they might witness, what effect that might have on them.'

'If you are victim, it's not your fault. There's no blame on you. There's lots of support out there and lots of professionals who want to help.'

To access support, victims of domestic abuse in Leicestershire and Rutland can call the Freeva helpline on 0808 802 0028, or call the 24hr national helpline on 0808 2000 247.

Anyone experiencing domestic abuse outside of Leicestershire and Rutland can seek support via the NHS website.
