With unprecedented high temperatures forecast to take hold of Stamford and Rutland today, we quizzed a local childcare expert on how to best make sure kids are well protected.

Childcare expert Caitlin Steward, known as the Rutland Nanny, says the safest option is to definitely keep young ones inside during the high heat.

But if you did dare to venture out into the tropical weather, there's some easy tips and tricks to help keep kids cool.

'When they're in pushchairs dress them in loose clothing, never a blanket over the top because that just makes them overheat, even though you think you're putting them in the shade. It actually then acts more like an oven and it just gets too hot', Caitlin said.

The Met Office has issued it's first ever red weather warning for "extreme heat"

'The best thing for pushchairs is parasols which you can buy specifically, and you can actually get specially designed fans for pushchairs if you're really worried about it.'

She added: 'Waterplay is a good one to do outside to keep them cool and however nice it is outside, sometimes during the middle of the day and hours between 10-3 it's actually better for them just to be inside in the cool and in the shade.'

'In terms of car seats, keeping car seats cool. When you're not in the car to cover it with muslins or blankets just to stop the straps and metal clips getting to hot, because then when you're putting them in the car just to stop them from burning, because they can get quite hot in the sun.'
