Rutland and Melton's MP has called for tougher sanctions against Russia following its military intervention into Ukraine.

Tensions had been mounting in recent months between Moscow and Kyiv, which escalated after Russia recognised two pro-Russian breakaway regions in Ukraine.

As a result, Russian soldiers entered the regions for 'peacekeeping purposes', thus violating Ukrainian sovereignty and breaking international law.

Speaking following an emergency COBRA meeting, the Prime Minister said there would be swift sanctions imposed on Russian individuals.

But Rutland's MP Alicia Kearns has called on the government to introduce harsher restrictions on Russian companies operating in the UK.

In a tweet, Ms Kearns said that she believed Vladimir Putin had "more than breached the threshold" for sanctions.

"We must now act to show escalation will have consequences," she said before adding that "any response must be meaningful, beyond sanctions on individuals & businesses."

Ms Kearns suggested that to best area to strike would be to blacklist Russian banks, as well as banning the City of London from allowing Russian companies to work in its borders.

No specific sanctions have been outlined by the Prime Minister, but he is due to address MPs regarding the Ukrainian crisis this afternoon.
