Rutland military base could be new home to asylum seekers

It's being reported a military base in Rutland could be used to home over 2,000 asylum seekers.

St George's Barracks near North Luffenham's one of around 120 sites being considered to temporarily house families, after the Prime Minister vowed to end the use of hotels.

A Home Office spokesman told The Times newspaper: “The number of people arriving in the UK who require accommodation has reached record levels and has put our asylum system under incredible strain.

"We have been clear that the use of hotels to house asylum seekers is unacceptable."

St George’s Barracks is due to close in 2026.
