With living costs only continuing to rise, we asked what people in Rutland think the government should do to help those of us feeling the pinch.

Chancellor Rishi Sunak's expected to announce a mini-budget later today to help stem the crisis for some people, only a few months after a spring budget review.

It comes after energy regulator Ofgem announced there would be another expected rise to energy price caps come October.

The energy price cap, which already increased by an average of £700 per year in April, is expected to go up by over £800 - putting bills for some as high as £2,800.

Drastic changes needed or a limit to what can be done?

At a time when inflation is already at its worst in 40 years, Rutland residents told us what changes they'd like to see to take the pressure off our pockets:

"It's ridiculous. At the end of the day, some Government have got to be accountable - whether it be Conservative, Labour, Liberal, whoever gets in - but I think it's just spiralling out of control and It's the same as everything in life, if someone doesn't do something about it, it will just continue spiralling out of control", said one man.

Kantar says supermarket prices are rising at their fastest rate for 13 years

Another man said: "I think (the Government) needs to make an economic climate which encourages businesses to do well, it could talk to the companies, but unfortunately with the war in Ukraine the energy bills are going to go high and there's a limit to what the Government can do."

One woman said: "I think they need to raise the benefit level or put the £20 back on the supplement that they used to have during Covid. I think that the people that can afford to keep going shouldn't be the people that get all the tax cuts all the time. I think people with money are in a privileged position and there should be some compassion."

"I think they're very limited in what they can do, they've obviously got to help the people that can't afford it but it's going to be a huge amount of money, and it may get worse", said another man.
