There's a charity walk this Sunday at Rutland Water, where participants are fundraising for three hospices in Leicestershire and Rutland.

The money will go towards supporting the end-of-life care services at LOROS, Sue Ryder and Dove Cottage.

It will begin at 9:30am on Sunday 3rd April from Whitwell Car Park, with there being 5, 28 and 38km routes to choose from.

Those wanting to get involved can register in advance or on the day

A positive light

The event itself also has a greater meaning - to encourage more people to talk about the benefits of arranging end-of-life care.

Her Majesty's Lord Lieutenant of Rutland, Dr Sarah Furness, organised the walk with help from Leicestershire and Rutland hospice Dying Matters - she says there's a stigma there for some people:

"My mother used to talk to me about what happened when she died and I was so embarrassed and so appalled at the thought of her dying that I used to shut her up and say 'don't be morbid mum'...

"But actually, it turned out that she made all the plans and she did die unexpectedly, and when she died there was everything that I had to do, and it was like she was holding my hand all the way through and I think if we can do that, it's such a kindness to our loved ones...

"... we can just make sure that the ends of our days have the best quality possible, and that's exactly why I want us all to support our local hospices because that's what they're all about, providing really good, sensitive care".
