Farmers across Peterborough, Stamford and Rutland are joining their colleagues across the country and urging the Government to make better use of cow poo.

A new report from the European dairy group Arla has found manure and slurry from our farms could help power 6.4 million homes.

This potential fuel is currently wasted.

Workers at Rutland's Ahimsa Dairy Farm use biogas from more than 40 of their own cows to power the on-site machinery to make milk.

Vraj, the manager at the farm, said: "When we think about how many cattle we have in the UK ... if that's put to the right use, we could have some input.

"When that kind of solution is scaled up, it opens new possibilities and the handling can be easier and more efficient.

"Even though we pride ourselves on being a small farm, it doesn't mean this kind of solution will be limited to small applications."

"If we don't waste something, we actually can profit from it, especially with the energy prices which are really high at the moment".
