The MP for Rutland & Melton, Alicia Kearns has been speaking out about the abuse she has experienced in politics.

She told Greatest Hits Radio: "Unfortunately locally I've had local people threaten to kill my children.

"I've had people come to meetings and threaten to drive me and my family out of Rutland & Melton.

"I've had people shout and scream down the street and on a daily basis my inbox is sadly full of nasty emails attacking me personally."

The MP took to Facebook this weekend following the death of Sir David Amess to pay her respects to 'a gentle man who was always kind and full of life, joy and wisdom'.

Sir David Amess was killed in his Southend constituency on Friday.

Alicia also highlighted some of her experiences: "Hatred has become too commonplace and accepted in our society.

"It only leads to division and harm.

"I have been deeply shocked and saddened since my election by how so many revel in being abusive, antagonistic or rude; who enjoy attacking others, and in hating those with other opinions or political views.

"People who genuinely enjoy pulling others down.

"I hope as your MP I've been able to rise above petty attacks and stoking tensions and divisions, staying focused on what I promised to deliver for us."

The details of a review into politicians' safety is expected in the coming days - Alicia told us what she thinks needs to be considered:

"All MPs should have personal security training, what to do if someone comes at you with a knife, with a gun, if a crowd turns ugly and that's what we need to do.

"We can't be looking at putting in place things like airport style monitoring and things like that.

"It's just not tenable and I would never want that because the most important thing as an MP is being available to my constituents."
