Miles of roadworks lifted in Peterborough ahead of August Bank Holiday
National Highways have temporarily lifted nearly 1,000 miles of roadworks in total
Miles of roadworks have been lifted across Peterborough and out towards the East Coast, ahead of August Bank Holiday.
It comes as figures from Visit England show a record 10 million Brits are planning on an overnight 'staycation' this weekend.
It's thought families hitting the road but staying in the UK will help contribute nearly £3bn to the economy.
1,000 miles of roadworks lifted
A total of 972 miles worth of roadworks in total will have been lifted across National Highways' road network.
Senior network planner, Frank Bird, said: 'The A47 - there is around 6 miles of roadworks that have been lifted, some near junction 15 and Sutton roundabout, and again at junction 17 to try and ease traffic getting through and around Peterborough.'
'For drivers on single-track roads, please be patient if you're stuck behind slower moving traffic. Don't take chances, there will be opportunities for you to be able to overtake.'
'We encourage people to have a rest at least every two hours, but obviously if you're feeling tired pull over at the next available place. Don't just assume you have to drive non-stop for long distances.'
A boost for holiday businesses
VisitEngland Chief Executive Patricia Yates said: “We know how important Bank Holidays are in bringing an economic boost with the money generated going in to local economies and supporting jobs. Businesses will also be looking to the long weekend for a critical late summer lift, building vital cash flow.
Our research shows the impact that cost of living concerns are having on travel intentions with the weather also having an impact. This highlights the ongoing challenges for tourism businesses and destinations and the importance of extending the tourism season into autumn and beyond.”
