'Industry-wide redundancies' if yearly MOTs scrapped, says Stamford garage
MPs discussed the idea to help with the cost of living crisis
A Stamford MOT and repair centre has criticised the idea of making annual MOT tests every two years instead
The idea was discussed by MPs, as the Government tries to find solutions to help deal with the cost of living crisis.
But, such a decision would be dangerous to road users, cause job losses for people in the industry and it wouldn't help families save - according to Adrian from West Street Garage.
'Businesses that solely do MOT tests and no repairs, that contribute to a local community as we do, would certainly have at least half their income reduced, and on that they could only sustain half the number - or two testers, so I would certainly expect redundancies throughout the industry', he said.
A problematic idea
Adrian added that the move would be a dangerous one, considering the amount of usage of some vehicles, and that regular checks are needing to prevent disaster:
'Last year there were 1,539 accidents in the UK, leading to 32 fatalities and 359 serious injuries have been proven to be caused by defects in a motor vehicle. The proposal has come along before, we feel that it is dangerous with the high mileages that some vehicles are doing per annum.'
'The cost would just be deferred into a 24 month period and not a 12 month period. The MOT test fee for a class 4 vehicle is not prohibited, it's set by the Government, and I don't believe that will have a major affect on family income.'
