Tearing down posters "not going to stop" Oakham Pride, as more support shown
The first event of its kind will take place two weeks from today
More support is being shown for Oakham Pride, as preparations get underway for the inaugural event happening two weeks from today.
Stamford Diversity Group and the South Kesteven District Council were publicly backing the event recently by handing out flyers in the Lincolnshire town.
It's a welcome boost of support after original flyers put up around Oakham were torn down and left on the streets - much to the disgust of organisers.
Chairman of Oakham Pride, Lucy Slessor, said the unfortunate actions of some won't get in the way of Rutland welcoming its first pride event on June 25th:
'There is somebody or some people, or a group of people, going round trying to destroy it as it were. But they're not going to stop it, it just unfortunately shows their character rather than ours. Nobody is forced to go to it or have to deal with it.'
'Going around I noticed there was only one or two (flyers) that were still up, and it was very much a case of them being torn down because they'd been ripped right down the middle and just been discarded, the person hadn't even bothered to put them in the bin.'
'These days you would expect, or you would hope rather, that there would be a lot more openness or tolerance even of minority groups, whether it be LGBTQ+, whether it be race-based, culture-based, whatever.'
